Visiting the Project

First of all we would like to thank you for coming to get to know the project and share some time with us.

Calafou is the result of many ideas, passions, experiences and visions that have made this project and what we are building today possible. An artefact with a future. A machine that generates paths and collective identities. A complex and hybrid organism made up of multiple subjectivities that cooperate to reconstruct a reality of life according to the codes that we choose, that belong to us and that we share.

Ultimately, we are building a set of infrastructures that aim to make up for the lack of technological sovereignty that we suffer from and that makes us dependent on the cognitive-industrial-financial empire. That is why we are interested in sharing what is primordial for us: the creation of collective, shared and situated knowledge. We also believe it is necessary for you to understand that this is a very young project, in which there is still much to be done.

Among all the inhabitants and visitors, we are building Calafou, working together to overcome the difficulties due to its size, the state of abandonment in which we find the property, and the long effort that involves bringing together a group to manage such a complex project effectively and according to the criteria in which we believe.

We know that we cannot build Calafou alone and that we need the help of many people who like to work together, collaborate, exchange, learn and participate. In order to facilitate these spaces of coexistence and to be able to attend to the visits and residences with due attention and energy, we have several ways of receiving stays in Calafou.

Open Days

Our Open Days offer an opportunity for a temporary visit. These days usually combine thematic working sessions aimed at improving and generating new spaces and infrastructure in the community as well as conducting workshops on various topics. If you would like to be informed of the dates of the next Open Days, subscribe to our mailing list here: https://lists.riseup.net/www/subscribe/infocalafou

Short Visits

We always ask you to contact us first at: calafou(at)riseup(dot)net so that you can tell us about yourself and the reasons for your visit, as well as how long you want to stay. If the community has people who want to sponsor your visit, they will contact you to specify the conditions and dates you can come. When you come, you will be asked to attend the assembly in an active listening mode and to take part in the tasks and days of community work. In order to organize ourselves well, we limit the maximum time for short stays to fifteen days. After this period of time the person interested in extending his stay must communicate his intention to the assembly and the assembly will value his continuity in the project. Find out about the project on this website, about what we want to do in Calafou and what our principles and methods of organisation are.

Residencies

We always ask you to contact us first at: calafou(at)riseup(dot)net so that you can tell us about yourself and the reasons for your residency or research, as well as how long you want to stay. If the community has residents who want to sponsor your residency, they will contact you to specify the conditions and dates in which you can come. When you come, you are asked to attend the assembly in active listening mode and to take part in the community tasks and work days. If your proposal is to carry out research about Calafou or to produce some documentary, written or audiovisual piece, we recommend that you first read our protocol for research and media. Calafou also hosts artistic residencies or the research and development of appropriate techniques and technologies. Find out about the project on this website, about what we want to do in Calafou and what our principles and methods of organisation are.

Living in Calafou

In order to live in Calafou, you must first spend some time here during one of the modalities described above (Open Days and other events held in Calafou, Short Visits or Residences). If you want to stay longer, you will have to present your proposal at an assembly and be assigned a sponsor. Attendance at the assembly is requested in active listening mode.
From the fourth month onwards, we ask for a gradual integration in the decision-making process as well as in the management areas.
Several evaluations are carried out for the new inhabitants: a first evaluation after two weeks to detect any serious discomfort. A second evaluation is carried out after a month. If a new inhabitant does not pass, the causes are evaluated and a decision is made (either to rule out their integration into the project or to ask for a next evaluation every month). A third evaluation is carried out after 4 months and a fourth evaluation is carried out every year, allowing the applicant to apply for the right to use a flat and to be considered as a member of the project.

Please also note that…

We apologize if all the information is not up to date or if we sometimes do not manage to answer you. We are not always able to devote sufficient attention to all the requests.

  • Calafou is not a holiday resort but a political project for social transformation, as well as the home of a community.
  • Calafou is an eco-industrial and cooperative project. It is not an agricultural project, nor an eco-village, nor a health project, nor a place of retreat to work on spirituality or existential questions. It is not an idyllic place because of its nature and environment, although we are all working to achieve that one day.
  • We need people to come who are sympathetic to the project, who have a desire to work and get involved in the daily tasks, as well as sufficient autonomy to fulfil the commitments that life in Calafou requires, without demanding too much of the energy or attention of the people who live their daily lives here. We would like to share this space with people who bring their knowledge and experience and their humility and respect for the work that has already done. Calafou does not believe in leaders or subordinates. For this reason we need people who are both autonomous and respectful of the dynamics of the collective.
  • We will ask you to attend the assembly to briefly present yourself to the group to explain your situation and your reasons for staying with us for a while. Then a Fairy Godmother will be assigned to you: a person from the colony who will be in charge of your follow-up during the first period of your stay, who will provide you with the basic information about the minimum commitments foreseen for the visits, and who will be your reference during the days you will spend with us. Of course we invite you to stay and attend the assembly, in the form of active listening.
    Thank you very much!
